WORLD IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER DAY
On the 21st October every year, the world joins hands to celebrate the iodine deficiency disorder people. The theme of this year is promote nutrition and healthcare for women and children. Prevent materianal child mortality, stunting, fight malnutrition, and disease prevention through vaccine.
This disorder is due to health abnormalities of the body resulting from prolonged lack of iodine, due to our bodies not producing iodine. With statistics from the WHO showing that nearly two billion individual shave insufficient iodine intake.Globally15.8% of the population with having 28.3% being from African. Kenya is not left out it has 3.5% of its population having the disorder which is below the WHO value of less than 5%.
With this cames some the effects as it may lead to endemic goiter, hypothyroidism, cretinism. In children it causes mental disabilities and an increased rate of infant mortality, in women it may cause infertility.
The signs of this disorder areas the swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck also called goiter, which has symptoms such as weight gain, dryskin,fatigue,muscle weakness, poor memory, increased sensitivity to the cold in adult, with children and teens they have poor growth, Mental development and delayed tooth development. If not treated may lead to server hypothyroid is that lead to heart failer, mental health or depression, infertility in women and miscarriages.
Doctors can test iodine deficiency by use of urine test, blood test, iodine patch test, and iodine loading test although with all this the best solution which is prevention by having healthy diety with enough iodine as fish, eggs, nuts, bread, iodized table salt.
The government should also educate the public on this disorder, with the help of the private sector. The Ministry of Health also should take the Campaign to the village and school seducating the public.
